The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York has awarded the South Surrey Interceptor – Johnson Road Section – Phase 2 project the 2022 Engineering Excellence Platinum Award in the Special Projects category.
The project, which twins a pipe that collects sewage from South Surrey and Langley, used microtunnelling to install 800 metres of 3.05-metre-diameter plastic-lined concrete sewer. At the time, the project was the largest diameter sewer pipe installed in a single pass via microtunnelling in Canada and, it’s believed, in North America.
The sewer was installed beneath three business parks and two active roadways containing numerous existing services as close as 40 millimetres away. By using trenchless methods, Metro Vancouver significantly reduced disturbance to nearby business parks and eliminated the need to completely close extremely busy 152nd Street.
This is the third award this project has received.
