Metro Vancouver Supports Expanding the Regional Food Network

Metro Vancouver and FoodMesh are working together to reduce food waste in the region.

In 2015, Metro Vancouver implemented a disposal ban on organic materials to encourage residents and businesses to properly dispose of organics by separating food scraps from garbage. Since then, the region has seen a 60-per-cent increase in organics recycling, and today the regional diversion rate for organics is 68 per cent.

Last year, to support further reductions in food waste, Metro Vancouver started working with FoodMesh, a Vancouver-based food recovery service provider, to grow its regional food recovery network. This initiative will help organizations in the region divert their unsold and unused food to those who can use it.
