Work is underway on a new reservoir and water main in Surrey that will help Metro Vancouver meet the demands of growing communities south of the Fraser River for clean, safe drinking water.
Construction began in August at the schoolyard of Berkshire Park Elementary and 10 pipe sections of the water main have been installed. Each pipe is nearly one metre in diameter and the finished main will be one kilometre long. The water main will connect the new reservoir to the regional drinking water system.
The reservoir will be located in Meagan Anne MacDougall Park, and construction, which is expected to last about two years, will start in early 2022. The reservoir will be able to hold 13.6 million litres of water, which could fill up 114 TransLink buses.
Water main work will continue into late fall 2021. After construction has finished, the City of Surrey will make park improvements, including the design and installation of a new playground.
Metro Vancouver is committed to working closely with the community and the city to ensure concerns and interests are considered as the project continues.
